Don’t involve in debt recovery, AVG warns members

The Anambra Vigilant Group (AVG) has warned its members operating in the 177 communities in the state not to involve themselves in debt recovery and related matters.

It warned that any member caught engaging in such act would be dealt with decisively.

This was contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Awka, the Anambra State capital, on Monday by the spokesman of AVG, Mr. Nweke Nweke.

Nweke said the warning was necessitated by series of reports from different communities, alleging that some members of the local security outfit engaged in debt recovery.

Advising men of the outfit to always apply the rules of their engagement while discharging their legitimate duties, AVG pointed out that their primary assignment was to assist other security agents in curbing the menace of criminal activities in their respective locality.

The statement read in part,”It is clear, we are not a debt recovery outfit. Our major duty is to report any suspicious movement, assist the police and other security agents in apprehending any criminal, as well as handing over anyone arrested to the police for investigation and possible prosecution.

“Henceforth, anyone caught engaging in debt recovery will be dealt with decisively.”

Nweke appealed to the Presidents General of communities not to use any member of the AVG as a debt recovery agent, but as local security whose responsibility would be to assist other security agents in the fight against crimes and criminality.

Nweke further noted that using their men as debt recovery outfit would make AVG lose its credibility.

Lauding members of the public for believing in AVG, the outfit said they were soliciting more cordial relationships with the people in rural areas in getting useful information that would assist them in discharging their duties effectively.
