Over 400 widows, physically challenged persons, and other indigent individuals gathered at the Governor’s Lodge in Amawbia, Anambra State, before 7 am on Thursday, seeking assistance from Governor Prof Chukwuma Soludo’s administration.

Eyewitnesses reported that the crowd, predominantly women, had been informed that the governor had invited them for help.

However, many were left frustrated and confused due to police screening and an apparent selection process.

“I was told that the governor wants to see us for help,” said one widow, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity.

Continuing, she said,”But I’m finding it difficult because they said some people had been chosen earlier and given identification numbers. I don’t have any number, but I need help.”

The scene at the Governor’s Lodge was chaotic, with many struggling to gain entry.

Police officers were seen screening the crowd at the first gate, leading to complaints from some individuals who felt impeded.

Our correspondent observed that the Governor’s wife, Nonye Soludo, has initiated several programmes aimed at bettering the lives of less privileged persons in the state, particularly women.

However, the sheer number of people seeking assistance highlights the vast needs 0of the indigent population.

As the situation continues to unfold, questions arise about the effectiveness of the selection process and the ability of the government to meet the demands of the vulnerable population.
