Anambra based journalist, Jude Atupulazi has advised students in Nigerian students to avoid engaging in unofficial marriages while on campus.

Atupulazi gave the advice at a programme organized by the Association of Mass Communication Students (ASOMAC) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State.

He noted that such relationships could lead to poor academic performance, lack of focus and regrettable experiences.

He described campus romance as significant distraction facing many students, warning that such behaviour could result to a bleak future.

While sharing his experiences during his university days, Atipulazi, Editor-in-Chief of Fides Newspaper who spoke as keynote lecturer advised students to form study groups of four or five students to achieve good results.

He highlighted the importance of concentrating on studies, encouraging students to broaden their knowledge by reading newspapers, listening to news, and being attentive in class.

He said, “School environment is not conducive for students to live with the opposite sex in their hostels, while Nigeria’s brutal and impatient environment may not provide the necessary motivation.

“You must aspire to be your own inspiration, you must be alive to your environment, know what is trending, and be able to write or discuss issues intelligently.

“Unofficially “marrying” on campus can lead to a range of negative consequences, including: poor academic performance, lack of focus, regrettable experiences and bleak future.”

Identitying various opportunities available to Mass Communication students, the veteran journalist challenged the students to explore such options to secure gainful employment after graduation.

He commended the organizers for coming up with the programme, expressing optimism that the students would benefit from it.
