The Labour Party in Anambra State has thrown its weight behind the Senator Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee established to reposition the party.

The Anambra chapter, led by Peter Okoye, in a four-point resolution from its state executive committee meeting in Awka, vowed to participate in the forthcoming September 28, 2024, council poll.

Another faction, through its publicity secretary, Engr Theo Egbe had maintained its position of non-participation in the election, describing it as a mere sham.

But the Okoye faction, urged the public, including ANSIEC, to disregard any contrary statements from any source.

appreciated efforts of their dedicated leaders, Mr. Peter Obi and Dr. Alex Otti, the Executive Governor of Abia State, for their relentless work in repositioning the party for greater achievements in Nigeria’s political landscape.

“Their efforts, along with those of other critical stakeholders, including members of the National and State Assemblies elected under the platform of our great party, led to the extended stakeholders meeting of the party on September 4, 2024, at the Government House, Umuahia, aimed at salvaging the party from its impending disintegration. This was a step in the right direction,” it stated.

The communiqué, read by Comrade Jerry Nnubia, Secretary of the State Transition Committee, congratulated the newly constituted 29-member National Caretaker Committee under the chairmanship of Senator Esther Nenadi Usman.

According to the communiqué, the chapter commended the choice of the Caretaker team members and expressed confidence in their ability to reposition the party to win more elections in the future, especially at the presidential level, for the greater good of all Nigerians suffering under the APC-controlled Federal Government.

The party also pledged full participation in the forthcoming September 28, 2024, council poll in Anambra State.

According to the LP, there was an initial mix-up with the names of its candidates as published by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), but this has been corrected following the party’s intervention.

“We urge the public, including ANSIEC, to disregard any contrary statements from any source,” the party stressed.

Okoye, flanked by other executive members in an interview with journalists shortly after the meeting, stated that the party was eagerly anticipating the approaching 2025 governorship election in the state and would use the council poll as a test case for its popularity.

“We intend to take over the Anambra State Government House next year, and nothing will stop us,” he added.
