Barr. Tobechukwu Nweke SAN, the newly appointed Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Anambra State has vowed to end the era of unlawful detention and awaiting trial in Anambra justice system.

Nweke has also expressed his readiness to decongest correctional facilities in the state to ensure that inmates don’t stay longer than necessary in the facilities.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) who gave an idea of his work plan while responding to questions from journalists at the Light House Awka, said his priority and that of the governor, is to quicken conclusion of cases in courts.

Nweke said there would be some rejigging and some reforming so that matters in courts would be concluded without unnecessary procrastinations.

He said for the criminal justice system, he is aware that there are some people in various correctional centres awaiting trials. According to him, those the state has prima facia cases against would face trials and prosecuted immediately while those who the state doesn’t have prima facia cases against would be released.

He therefore emphasized that the era of unlawful detentions are over and the era of keeping people in custody without trial is over, adding that government wants to do some rejigging so that criminal cases can be prosecuted and concluded within one year.

On the deplorable conditions of some of the courts, the new Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice disclosed that he would conduct an inspection tour of the courts to ascertain level of dilapidations as government plans to remodel some of the courts to give them facelifts.

Nweke emphasized that Governor Soludo is interested in having a good looking judiciary; one that people will have confidence in when they come to seek justice.
