The town of Oba, in Anambra State, has presented staff of office to the new igwe-elect of the community, Engr Sir Augustine Chinedu Emelobe.

The solemn ceremony was performed by elders and kingmakers, led by the elder of Urueze, otherwise known as ‘Aka ji Ofo Oba’, and elders of the nine villages that make up the town.

They presented the Igwe-Elect with a new Ọfọ Oba, the highest staff of authority and spirituality, symbolising the community’s trust and confidence in his leadership.

The event took place at the ancient shrine of the community at Urueze, the eldest community of the town.

After the traditional rites had been performed by the elders, the new King went straight to St Bethel Anglican Church, also at Urueze Oba, and dedicated his crown and leadership of the community to God.

The crème of Oba gathered for the ceremony, which is steeped in tradition and custom, and they showed their unwavering support for their new king.

The event was characterised by music, dance, food and drinks of all kinds. Traditional music groups and bands took their time to showcase the best of their musical talents.

Recall that on December 21, the people of Oba conducted a well-attended, rancour-free election, which was covered by the media and shared on Facebook and other social media platforms. Security agencies, including the police, were present.

Engr Emelobe was elected the Igwe of the community.
