The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has indicated that the Anambra South Senatorial District by-election may take place between May and June 2025.

A senior officer at the INEC office headquarters in Anambra who requested to remain anonymous disclosed this on Tuesday.

Recall that Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, the senator representing Anambra South, passed away seven months ago, leaving the seat vacant.

Since his death, the Anambra South Senatorial District has been without representation.

Earlier, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Anambra State, Queen Elizabeth Agwu, informed reporters that the Senate had officially notified the Commission about the vacancy in the Red Chambers.

However, she added that the date for the by-election had not yet been communicated.

But the State INEC officer stated, “Our duty as an electoral body is to conduct elections, and we are prepared to carry out the necessary actions once the date is set. But as of now, we have not been informed about the exact date.

“Based on available information at INEC’s office in Awka, the by-election is expected to be held between May and June 2025.

The Commission, according to the source, has received formal correspondence from the Senate regarding the election, and the necessary funds have already been allocated.

“I don’t want to be quoted, but I can tell you that the election will take place before the gubernatorial election in Anambra State, possibly as early as May or June this year,” the source added.

Prior to this announcement, political parties and their aspirants had been uncertain about when the by-election would be held, with concerns growing that both the gubernatorial election and the senatorial by-election might occur on the same day, November 8th, 2025.

It has been reported that 12 aspirants have expressed interest in contesting the position through their respective party primaries across the district.

Efforts to reach the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Anambra, Queen Elizabeth Agwu, for further comment were unsuccessful, as her phone line was unreachable.
