With the November 8, 2025, Anambra State governorship election approaching, the All Progressives Congress (APC) faces a critical decision in selecting a running mate for its flag bearer, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu. Four strong contenders have emerged, making the decision challenging for the party leadership.
According to an insider, the top names in contention include Senator Uche Ekwunife, Senator Margery Okadigbo, Olisaemeka Onyeka (popularly called Odu), and Ambassador Elijah Onyeagba. Each of these aspirants brings unique political experience and influence, making the final selection a strategic task for Ukachukwu and the APC.
Senator Ekwunife, a two-term House of Representatives member and former senator, is currently the Director-General of the Southeast Governors’ Forum. Known for her grassroots engagement, especially in Anambra Central, she also maintains strong connections within the Catholic community, making her a solid option with broad appeal.
Olisaemeka Onyeka, also from Anambra Central, is a Knight of the Catholic Church from Ogidi in Idemili North LGA. A founding member of the APC from the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) days, he served as the Southeast Zonal Youth Leader. During his tenure, he played a key role in mobilizing young people and ensuring equitable distribution of federal palliative programs, such as N-Power. He enjoys overwhelming support from youths and women across the state.
Senator Margery Okadigbo, representing Anambra North, is the widow of former Senate President Chuba Okadigbo. While she has significant political credentials and a calm demeanor, she is perceived to have a more limited grassroots following compared to Ekwunife and Onyeka.
Ambassador Elijah Onyeagba, also from Anambra Central, is regarded as a potential surprise choice in the race due to his diplomatic background and growing support.
All four aspirants are practicing Catholics, which reflects the predominant religious demographic in the state and may influence the final decision.
An APC chieftain, speaking anonymously, emphasized that Ukachukwu must select a running mate who will enhance the party’s chances against the incumbent government. “To defeat an incumbent isn’t easy,” he noted, “but with the right combination, APC can pull off an upset.”
The party’s final decision on a running mate is expected to shape its strategy and momentum going into the tightly contested election.
