Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State, is set to appoint another Acting Vice Chancellor amid a prolonged power struggle that has rocked the institution since last year.

This marks the third acting Vice Chancellor since the controversy erupted.

A circular signed by Acting Registrar Mr. Victor I. Modebelu invites Senate members to nominate candidates for the position.

Current Acting VC Prof Joseph Ikechebelu, reportedly vying for the substantive role, must recuse himself to comply with Federal Ministry of Education guidelines.

The 2013 policy, reaffirmed last year, bars acting Vice Chancellors from applying for the substantive position while in office. To contest, Ikechebelu must step aside for a neutral candidate.

Unizik’s tumultuous period saw Professor Benard Odoh’s short-lived substantive VC tenure.

Odoh’s removal led to Ikechebelu’s reappointment as Acting VC.

Ikechebelu previously acted as VC, was removed, and replaced by Prof Carol Arinze-Umobi, who later handed over to Odoh.

The appointment process will adhere to Ministry guidelines promoting transparency, equity, and fairness.

Stakeholders urge stability and continuity in the institution’s leadership.
