The Anambra State Board of Internal Revenue will on Thursday, commence the enumeration and profiling of traders across key markets in the state.

Speaking after the inauguration of over 100 trained enumerators, the Chairman of the Board, Dr. Greg Ezeilo, stated that the exercise is not solely aimed at increasing revenue but is primarily focused on gathering accurate data for effective planning and development of market infrastructure.

Dr. Ezeilo, who was represented by the Board’s Executive Director, Mr. Ben Anarobi Okafor, explained that the project seeks to capture the actual number of shops, stores, and traders operating in the state’s commercial centers.

“This is not a tax exercise,” “Without reliable data, you cannot plan, you cannot budget, and you cannot make adequate provisions for traders. Right now, if I am asked how many traders or shops we have in Anambra, I can’t give a definite answer. That needs to change.”he clarified.

According to him, the Board has trained more than 100 staff equipped with digital tools and specialized software to carry out the enumeration seamlessly and efficiently.

The enumerators are expected to visit major markets in the state, where they will digitally profile each trader. The profiling will include capturing personal information such as name, shop ownership details, and date of birth, creating a comprehensive database that will allow quick access to trader information at the touch of a button.

“We’re beginning with major urban markets,” “But we also plan to extend the enumeration exercise to semi-urban and even rural markets. Private plazas are not exempted anyone trading in Anambra State will be profiled.”he said.

He noted that the Board has already engaged market stakeholders, including market chairpersons and line leaders, to ensure cooperation and awareness of the initiative.

On the issue of security, Dr. Ezeilo assured that both internal and external security operatives will accompany the enumerators to ensure their safety during the exercise.

“All critical stakeholders have been fully briefed and are involved in the process,” “Our goal is to obtain accurate data across all markets—number of people, shops, and businesses so that government can plan effectively and support the ease of doing business in Anambra State.”he added.

He emphasized that proper enumeration would not only enhance infrastructural planning but would also curb unregulated activities in the markets, including unqualified individuals vying for leadership positions.

“This enumeration will bring order to our markets. No one should contest for leadership in a market where they are not a legitimate trader,” he said.

He urged market leaders to cooperate fully with the enumerators and to coordinate the exercise, including providing hotlines to report any challenges that may arise.

“The governor’s intention is to take our markets—and our traders—to the next level. And this process begins now.”he stated.
