The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a serving soldier for allegedly faking his own kidnapping in a bid to extort ₦20 million from his family.
The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Samuel Ekezie, a personnel of the 302 Artillery Regiment of the Nigerian Army, Onitsha, was apprehended on the evening of September 15, 2025, and taken into custody.
In a statement released by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the suspect allegedly staged his own abduction to obtain money from his relatives.
Preliminary investigations revealed that on August 15, 2025, Ekezie sent a text message to his family claiming he had been kidnapped and demanding a ransom of ₦20 million for his release.
SP Tochukwu further disclosed that, acting on technology-driven intelligence, operatives tracked and arrested the suspect at his hideout in Rivers State.
The Command assured the public of a thorough investigation into the matter, stating its commitment to ensuring justice is served.
