Over 10,000 members of opposition parties have formally defected to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area over the weekend.

The mass defection includes over 10,000 members from the All Progressives Congress (APC), 300 from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), 200 from the Labour Party (LP), and 100 from the Young Progressives Party (YPP). The event, held in Obosi, drew crowds in the thousands and was marked by fanfare, solidarity, and bold political declarations ahead of the upcoming Anambra gubernatorial elections scheduled for November 8, 2025.

According to the defectors, the decision to abandon their former parties stemmed from APGA’s growing influence and grassroots presence in Anambra, particularly in the Idemili region.

“This is not just about changing party cards; it’s about aligning with the future. APGA represents the will and aspirations of Ndi Anambra,” said a former APC ward leader during the event.

Speaking at the rally, Hon. Ifeanyi Okoma, Anambra State Commissioner for Works, celebrated the mass exodus from the opposition as validation of APGA’s performance and legacy in the state.

“I am overjoyed because Ndi Anambra now see clearly that APGA is the moving train,” “No one wants to go back to Egypt. The people have seen the light, and come November 8, they will vote wisely. APGA is not just a party—it is our identity, our home.”Okoma declared.

The event was attended by leading APGA figures from Idemili and across the state, all of whom reaffirmed the party’s commitment to inclusiveness and grassroots empowerment.

New entrants were assured of equal opportunities and encouraged to participate actively in the party’s structure and decision-making processes. Many defectors expressed a sense of relief and political belonging.

Bosco, a key defector from the APC, echoed the sentiment:“Today, we feel liberated. We are no longer outsiders. APGA is the only party that genuinely understands and prioritizes the needs of the people.

APGA also used the occasion to inaugurate newly appointed electoral officers for Idemili North. The ceremony was conducted by Hon. Lemmy Ekwo, APGA Chairman in Idemili North, and Hon. Obi Idemobi, Chairman of the Campaign Council.

The officers were charged with mobilizing communities, educating voters, and upholding the values of fairness, transparency, and loyalty as the election approaches.

“This is not just a campaign; it is a movement,” “We must engage every household, every ward, and every voter. The future of Anambra is in our hands.”said Idemobi.

Observers believe the mass defection has reshaped the political calculus in Anambra State, particularly in the vote-rich Idemili axis. With thousands crossing over from key opposition parties, APGA appears to have consolidated its grassroots dominance in a region historically considered politically competitive.

Analysts argue that the Obosi rally has not only energized the APGA base but also positioned the party as the front-runner heading into the November election.

“This defection wave isn’t just about numbers; it’s about momentum. APGA is now the political home of choice for Ndi Anambra,” said Dr. Uchenna Madu, a political analyst based in Awka.
