Meet the New Anglican Bishop of Ogoja Diocese: Venerable Vincent I. Akunna.

Ven. Vincent Ifeanyichukwu Akunna was born on 31st July 1973 to the family of Late Catechist Lemuel Nnaemeka Akunna and Mrs. Gladys Egonu Akunna. He hails from Abagana in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria.

He began his education at Community Primary School, Iva-Valley, Enugu, where he graduated in 1986, and later attended Union Secondary School, Awkunanaw, Enugu, where he obtained his Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) in 1991. He proceeded to the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State, where he earned a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Secretarial Administration in August 1998.

Following his graduation, he applied for employment as a Church Teacher in the Diocese of Abakaliki in October 1998, marking the beginning of his pastoral journey in the Anglican Communion. During his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, he was redeployed under a special arrangement to the Diocese of Abakaliki for his Primary Assignment.

He later trained for ministry at Trinity Theological College, Umuahia, Abia State. He was made a Deacon on 1st July 2001 and ordained a Priest on 7th July 2003 at All Saints’ Cathedral, Abakaliki, by the Rt. Rev’d Benson Onyeibor.
Ministry Experience.

While serving in the Diocese of Abakaliki, he was appointed Principal of Bishop Otubelu College (BOCA), Abakaliki, and Chaplain of the Chapel of the Redemption, (Anglican Communion) Ebonyi State University, (EBSU) Abakaliki.
He subsequently transferred to the Diocese of Nsukka, where he served as Chaplain to the Rt. Rev’d Dr. Jonah C. Ilonuba. In Nsukka, he held several responsibilities, including Assistant Clerical Synod Secretary, Chaplain to the Mothers’ Union & Women’s Guild, Chaplain to the Young Anglican Crusaders, and Chaplain to St. Cyprian’s Special Science School and St. Cyprian’s Girls Secondary School.

After a period of further studies in the United Kingdom, he returned to Nsukka Diocese. In 2010, he was preferred Canon by the Rt. Rev’d Aloysius Agbo. He later served briefly in the Diocese of Awka before moving to the Diocese of Abuja, where he was appointed Secretary to the the former Primate of All Nigeria, His Grace, The Most Rev’d Dr. Nicholas D. Okoh. In 2015, he was preferred Archdeacon by the same Primate.

Under the present leadership of the Primate of All Nigeria, His Grace, The Most Rev’d Dr. Henry C. Ndukuba, Ven. Akunna holds several key roles, including Secretary to the Primate, Assistant to the Primate on Special Duties, and GAFCON Desk Officer for the Church of Nigeria.

Additionally, he serves as Secretary for both the Church of Nigeria Socio-Political Team and the GAFCON G26 Planning Committee, acts as the Registrar for the Diocesan Training Centre, and is an active member of the GAFCON Theological Education Network.

Ven. Akunna furthered his studies at Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, where he obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Christian Religious Studies and a Master of Arts degree in New Testament Theology. He is also a Chartered Member of Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (MCPN).
