Concerns are mounting over the health of popular Anambra native doctor, Chidozie Nwangwu, widely known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, who has reportedly gone partially blind while in detention.
Nwangwu, who was arrested in February by operatives of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, is facing charges related to alleged money rituals, the preparation of charms for suspected criminals, and other fetish practices. Sources close to him claim his health has deteriorated significantly, with reports that he is frequently taken to a public hospital in Nnewi for treatment while being held in solitary confinement.
His arrest came shortly after the enforcement of the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025, signed by Governor Charles Soludo, which bans ritual practices believed to promote crime. Nwangwu and two other traditionalists were arraigned before a State High Court in Awka in April.
Associates of the detained spiritualist allege that he is being persecuted for practising African Traditional Religion. They accused authorities of violating his rights and urged the government to grant him bail so he could receive adequate medical care and have his trial expedited.
One associate, who requested anonymity, said Nwangwu’s businesses have collapsed since his incarceration, with his hotels closed and staff laid off. “He’s losing his sight and his health is deteriorating fast. He needs proper medical attention,” the source said.
Supporters, including businessman Ebuka Uche and socialite Princess Njideka Ndiwe, joined the call for his release, noting that youths in Oba community had recently appealed directly to Governor Soludo. They described Nwangwu as a key employer in Anambra’s hospitality sector, operating three hotels with about 80 staff members. “He pays his taxes, contributes to the economy, has tarred local roads, provides water, offers scholarships, and empowers youths,” they said.
A Lagos-based lawyer, Francis Obumse, also criticised the Homeland Security Law, describing it as unconstitutional. He argued that it violates sections 38 and 40 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantee freedom of thought, conscience, religion, and association. “Nigeria is a secular state. Any attempt to suppress traditional worship is a breach of fundamental human rights,” he said.
Meanwhile, some residents of Anambra have appealed to Governor Soludo to release Nwangwu on compassionate grounds in light of his reported deteriorating health.
When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Christian Aburime, said he was not aware of reports that Nwangwu was going blind. He declined further comment, noting that the matter is still before the court.
