According to him, the assailants pursued the convoy, opened fire, and eventually dispossessed his orderly of his rifle and uniforms after shooting him.

Former Governor of Anambra State and immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has narrated how gunmen ambushed his convoy, killing a woman and injuring his police orderly.

Speaking at his country home in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area, on Friday, when Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party paid him a visit, Ngige said the incident occurred around Umuoji when his aides, returning from errands, were attacked by armed men dressed in police and military uniforms.

According to him, the assailants pursued the convoy, opened fire, and eventually dispossessed his orderly of his rifle and uniforms after shooting him.

The senator dismissed rumours of his death, assuring the public that he was safe. “As you can see, I’m alive; I’m not dead, so there should be no panic,” he said.

Ngige added that the attackers accused the policemen in his convoy of “serving a zoo government,” a remark he found troubling and indicative of a possible attempt to seize arms or impersonate security personnel.

The former minister said he had briefed Governor Chukwuma Soludo, who assured him that the perpetrators would be tracked and brought to justice to prevent further threats to public safety.

He noted that it remained unclear whether the convoy was specifically targeted, explaining that his pilot driver of more than two decades was widely known, making the vehicles easily recognisable.

He also suggested the attackers may have been targeting any convoy accompanied by police escorts.

Reflecting on broader security concerns in the region, Ngige reiterated his position that the case of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu requires a political solution, particularly in light of reported concerns about Kanu’s health.

The attack drew strong condemnation from former Labour Party presidential candidate while commiserating with him and his family.

Obi described the incident as shocking and deeply painful, especially the killing of a woman at the scene.

He urged security agencies to intensify coordinated efforts as the festive season approaches, stressing that Nigerians deserve the freedom to live and travel in peace.

Obi thanked God for Ngige’s safety and extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the slain woman, calling on authorities to ensure justice and prevent similar tragedies
