The significance of the perceived rivalry between Professor Charles Soludo and Mr. Peter Obi lies in the fact that Governor Soludo represents one of the two strands within the Anambra political space, while Peter Obi represents the other strand. In Anambra State, careful observation reveals two distinct poles or paradigms in the political space. First, to be considered as a leader or potential leader in Anambra State, one must be cut from a formidable intellectual background. However, over the years, a shift has occurred, making space for successful businessmen in political leadership. Soludo represents the traditional bloc with formidable intellect, but Peter Obi represents the second bloc, which is the successful businessmen in political leadership. While Soludo currently models what leadership by an intellectual symbolizes, Peter Obi has modeled what it means to lead by a wealthy businessman. This is what is largely at play each time conversation pops up about Soludo and Peter Obi as it concerns national politics. Unfortunately, many people miss the point.
Before now, wealthy businessmen and other thought-leaders went out of their way to find credible and well-schooled individuals who were called to return, usually from cities, and be sponsored to serve their community by contesting for one elective position or another. Many Igbo societies carefully distinguished between wealth and good education, often categorized as wisdom needed for public service. Credibility for public service has never been defined in terms of how much one has or is willing to invest in a political process. The Igbo idea of the duality of things for cosmic harmony is profoundly expressed in the fact that wealthy individuals seek out brilliant and well-educated members of society to put forward for public service. By this, many Igbo societies demonstrate the conviviality of a fusion of wealth and academic brilliance in the prosperity and well-being of the society. However, things have taken a radical turn. Over the years, king makers have taken a sharp turn and instead offer themselves as kings. Wealthy individuals who once only helped those imbued with the tenacity, brilliance, and gift of public service now put themselves forward as public servants. Even those once regarded as Anambra godfathers now run for political offices. Interestingly, this new trend has not bridged the gap and line of duties between wealth and brilliance for social harmony in Igbo land. In places like Anambra, the gap has been widened and the competition more intense. This is why Charles Soludo and Peter Obi can never meet on the same table. Both represent the arrowheads of the two existing paradigms in Anambra’s political leadership landscape.
Besides their distinctive schools of thought, Soludo and Obi have played in Nigeria’s politics for upwards of two decades, and both started early. Each anchored his aspiration on a proximate path that commands Abuja’s nod. To buttress, in 2010, Peter Obi was campaigning for a second term in office as Governor of Anambra State on APGA’s platform. At the time, Soludo was the candidate of the PDP for the 2010 Anambra State Governorship Election, after he had just concluded his tenure as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. There were indications to suggest that Peter Obi was not accepted at the national power cycle in Abuja, which was, in fact, part of why he was impeached earlier. But the demise of President Musa Yar’adua changed the power equation when President Goodluck Jonathan emerged as President in 2010. President Jonathan forged an alliance with Peter Obi and APGA, and he was subsequently endorsed by Peter Obi and APGA as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2011 Presidential Election. Having lost out in the national power schemes, Soludo moved on till 2013 when he attempted to return to contest for the Anambra Governorship election in APGA, but was displaced, so he quietly left. Two years later, in 2015, the odds were building up against the incumbent in that year’s election. Professor Soludo made a comeback, leveraging his credibility and reputed brain-power that earned him national admiration. He wrote a lengthy open letter that came hard on Jonathan’s government, where he accused the government of varying degrees of corruption, mis-governance, and recklessness. He offered to debate anyone on behalf of the APC against the PDP’s government led by Jonathan. The APC won in 2015 and won again in 2019. Then in 2021, Soludo was elected Governor of Anambra State. Meanwhile, since 2015, Peter Obi’s alliance and membership of the PDP no longer offered proximity to power. In 2023, Obi ran for the presidency on the Labour Party’s platform, but Governor Soludo, in an open letter, dismissed his aspiration and predicted the APC’s victory. In 2025, Soludo was re-elected to serve for a second term in office, and he has fully aligned with President Tinubu’s APC federal government for a return in 2027. Essentially, Soludo and Obi are following distinctive paths in their aspirations, and from all accounts, no aspiration is more noble than the other. This is why those who wish to take sides must limit their position within what is obtainable in politics. Soludo’s position today is no different from Obi’s position in 2010.
It is also important to observe that Charles Soludo will maintain his own side of the divide. Similarly, Peter Obi will maintain his position, having been schemed out of the national mainstream political cycle. While Soludo has positioned himself as a brilliant Southeast material for national mainstream politics, Obi has positioned himself as a potential opposition figurehead from the Southeast. Both represent the two choices in every election. Those who argue that Soludo should support Obi simply have not come to terms with the fact that Soludo and Obi represent two worlds that cannot align in political leadership.
In the end, Soludo should remain Soludo in the same way that Obi has remained Obi. The people, including those finding fault with Soludo being Soludo, have nothing to lose either way.
