All arrangements have been concluded for the burial of Nigeria’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Arthur Mbanefo, who died at the age of 95.
The late Mbanefo, a renowned accountant and diplomat, also served as Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, as well as Obafemi Awolowo University and Ahmadu Bello University.
Speaking during a visit to the family residence, Iba Iwegbu Igwe, in Onitsha, the deceased’s younger brother, Okunwa Mbanefo, disclosed that dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond are expected to attend the funeral ceremonies.
According to him, the wake and burial rites will be conducted strictly in line with Onitsha customs and traditions, reflecting the family’s cultural heritage.
Okunwa, a New York-based accountant, also gave insight into the family’s history, explaining that “Iwegbu” and “Mbanefo” trace back to the same lineage, with the latter adopted as a surname following their father’s formal education.
He further revealed that their father, Aniegboka Mbanefo, had 18 children, 11 of whom are still alive. Chief Mbanefo, who will be laid to rest on Saturday, is among those who have passed on.
Describing his late brother as a man of integrity, Okunwa noted that Mbanefo was guided by honesty, humility, and respect for all, regardless of status.
“Arthur believed strongly in being honest with oneself first. He treated people the way he wanted to be treated and never placed emphasis on wealth, even though he was comfortable,” he said.
Mbanefo served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United Nations from 1999 to 2004, having been appointed by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. During his career, he also played key roles in national assignments, including contributions to state creation efforts under the administration of Shehu Shagari.
A former president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Mbanefo worked with leading accounting firms, including Akintola Williams, before establishing his own practice.
The family confirmed that a wake-keeping ceremony will hold at 9 p.m. on Friday, ahead of the burial scheduled for Saturday, with a large turnout of prominent personalities expected to honour the late elder statesman.
