By Ebuka Onyekwelu, Ph.D

The Anambra State House of Assembly, during plenary on Tuesday, read the Anambra State Commuters Manifest Bill, 2026, for the second time. The Bill, which was sponsored by Hon. Jude Ngobili, the House of Assembly member representing Ihiala 1 constituency, was debated and received huge support from members present at the plenary.

Arguing his bill, Hon. Ngobili submitted that the bill will help to keep a record of people coming into Anambra and those going outside the state, as well as those transiting within the state. This, he said, will help in any emergency, both in the quick administration of medication and in reaching out to commuters’ next of kin in the event of an accident-related death.

The Anambra State Commuters Manifest Bill 2026 made provision for the establishment of an agency to discharge core duties, such as setting up machinery for the collection of tolls and covering medical expenses of up to N50,000, and N200,000 in cases of death, for commuters.

At this stage, the bill is expected to be discussed at the committee stage, read for the third time, and then passed into law.
