Actress and Former governorship candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in Anambra State, Chioma Ifemeludike, has emerged as the party’s senatorial candidate for Anambra Central ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ifemeludike secured the ticket through a consensus arrangement during the party’s primary election held on Thursday under the supervision of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Her emergence sets the stage for a major contest against incumbent Senator Victor Umeh and the eventual candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the battle for the Anambra Central Senatorial seat.
The exercise also produced Agozie Mmotoh as the AAC candidate for Awka North and South Federal Constituency.
Announcing the results, Returning Officer Obianuju Aniche praised party members for conducting themselves peacefully and orderly throughout the exercise.
Reacting to her emergence, Ifemeludike expressed gratitude to party faithful for entrusting her with the ticket, assuring them of quality representation and unwavering commitment to the people.
“I appreciate the confidence reposed in me by party members. I will not compromise my principles or disappoint them. We remain committed to the pursuit of quality representation,” she said.
The AAC deputy national chairperson maintained that although the party may not possess the financial strength and structures of bigger political parties, it remains committed to integrity, accountability and people-oriented governance.
“Yes, we may not control large crowds, but one determined individual can drive change. I would rather stay with a smaller party and do the right thing than join a bigger platform and compromise my values,” she stated.
According to her, the 2027 election presents an opportunity for voters to embrace alternatives capable of changing the political narrative in the state. “I’m here to prove that things do not have to continue this way. There are credible alternatives, and in time, the people will appreciate the choices they make,” she added.
Ifemeludike described zeal and passion as the major forces sustaining her political ambition, insisting that conviction and sincerity outweigh money and political structures.
“For me, passion and zeal are stronger than money or structures. Those qualities helped me during the governorship election and will continue to guide me in this journey.
“In AAC, we do not manipulate the people or induce voters. We are here to present our ideas and manifesto and allow citizens to make informed choices,” she said.
The Ezinimo, Eziowele-born politician from Idemili North Local Government Area explained that her emergence as consensus candidate reflected the confidence party members have in her leadership ability and experience.
“It was a collective decision by party members who believe I am best positioned to represent the party based on my experience as state leader and former governorship candidate,” she noted.
On the issue of vote-buying and transactional politics, Ifemeludike described the trend as one of the greatest threats to democracy and good governance. “No matter how qualified a candidate may be, many voters still make decisions based on immediate financial inducement because trust in the political system has been broken,” she lamented.
She, however, stressed the need for sustained advocacy, political consciousness and social justice to reawaken the electorate. “One of the greatest social justice movements that can happen is a revolution of the mind. Our people need a shift in thinking.
“Unless that happens, nobody can truly save them — not Peter Obi, not Sowore, not even Jesus Christ. The people must rise against the injustice being done to them and future generations,” she added.
