Onitsha-born former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme, has added another remarkable chapter to his inspiring life story after stepping into the boxing ring for a charity event in Liverpool and emerging victorious.
The former Super Eagles shot-stopper participated in a charity boxing event held at the Titanic Hotel in Liverpool, aimed at raising funds for several Merseyside-based charities.
The event drew the attention of football fans and sports enthusiasts, as a large number of retired football stars traded their boots for boxing gloves in support of charitable causes.
Ikeme’s football career was tragically cut short following a diagnosis of acute leukaemia. However, he has since demonstrated exceptional resilience and determination in his recovery journey.
The 39-year-old former Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper won his first-ever boxing bout via technical knockout in the second round, earning applause from spectators who admired his courage and fighting spirit.
The victory was particularly emotional for many supporters familiar with Ikeme’s personal battle with illness, which occurred during what was widely regarded as the peak of his international football career.
Widely respected in both Nigeria and England, his return to competitive sport in a different discipline was seen as yet another symbol of strength and perseverance.
Before the fight, his opponent, Orr, paid tribute to Ikeme’s inspiring story, acknowledging the former goalkeeper’s battle with cancer.
