The Anambra State Government is ready to partner with communities across the state to elevate major local festivals to international events, following the completion of feasibility studies, consultations, and work plans, the Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Barrister Udoji Amedu, has announced.
Amedu made the disclosure while attending the Omaliko Festival of Abatete Community in Idemili North Local Government Area, saying the initiative would also extend to heritage and tourist sites such as Ogbunike Cave, Owerre-Ezukala Caves and Waterfalls, and festivals including the Eri Festival, which has already begun attracting foreign visitors.
The Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, who is an indigene of Abatete, said the community is prepared to welcome visitors and partners, adding that the festival has been reformed to meet international standards and is positioned to become a significant tourist attraction.
Former Anambra Commissioner for Sports Chief Okey Muo-Aroh and the Chairman of the Occasion, Chief Hyacinth Ilonze, described the Omaliko Festival as a celebration that promotes brotherliness, peace, togetherness, and hard work, and marks the beginning of the farming season in the community.
The traditional ruler of Abatete, Igwe Charles Efobi, represented by Chief Emmanuel Odeluga, offered prayers for continued peace in the community and called on youths to uphold the dignity of hard work for which Abatete is known.
