Catch Them Young Community Initiative (CATYCOI) has emphasized the need for young people to be recognized as partners in development and not merely beneficiaries of development programs.
Executive Director, Nonso Orakwe stated this during Quarterly Youth LGA Dialogue Session in Onitsha South Local Government Area of Anambra State, supported by Nigeria Futures Fund (NYFF).
He commended the young participants for their enthusiasm and commitment which he described as critical for building inclusive and sustainable communities.
He said, “Youth participation is essential for building inclusive and sustainable communities.
“Platforms such as this dialogue session provide young people with the opportunity to contribute their ideas, influence decisions, and take ownership of the development process.
“When young people are empowered to participate meaningfully, communities become stronger, more responsive, and better prepared for the future,” he stated.
CATYCOI boss further encouraged participants to remain actively engaged in community affairs, civic processes, and leadership opportunities, stressing that collective action is key to achieving the positive change young people seek.
Also speaking, Councillor representing Fegge Ward 1, Hon. Chidi Ogbuagu applauded the organizers for creating platform that encouraged dialogue between young people and community leaders.
He noted that youth engagement remains a critical component of effective grassroots governance.
“The future of our communities depends largely on the involvement of young people in decision-making and development initiatives.
“It is important that young people continue to speak up, participate constructively, and work together with leaders to address local challenges.
“Your voices matter, and your contributions can help shape policies and actions that benefit the entire community,” he said.
Ogbuagu also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that promote youth empowerment, civic engagement, and community development within Onitsha South.
“By creating opportunities for meaningful participation, we continue to empower young people to become active contributors to governance processes and community development initiatives.
“These engagements not only amplify youth voices but also foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and shared responsibility for the future.
“Together, we are building stronger communities through dialogue, collaboration, and youth-led action.”
The Dialogue Session brought together young people from across the community to engage in meaningful conversations on community development, youth participation and leadership.
The session provided a dynamic platform for participants to identify pressing local challenges, exchange innovative ideas and develop practical recommendations aimed at strengthening community engagement and promoting sustainable development.
Through open dialogue and collaborative discussions, young people were encouraged to share their perspectives and contribute to solutions that address issues affecting their communities.
A key highlight of the dialogue was the active participation of youth leaders and community stakeholders, who emphasized the importance of inclusive decision-making and the role of young people in driving positive social change.
Participants explored opportunities for civic engagement, leadership development, and collective action, reinforcing their commitment to building stronger and more resilient communities.
