Work is ongoing on a large-scale drainage construction project aimed at providing a permanent solution to the persistent flooding along the Ogidi-Umudioka Road in Anambra State, with the project advancing through its phases under the direction of the state government.

The Anambra State Government commenced the construction of a drainage channel in 2024, spanning over eight kilometres from the Nkpor-Umuoji Road. The project is structured in phases, with Phase One involving the channelisation of floodwater around the Onitsha-Owerri Road and connecting to the drainage behind the Meteorological Institute. Phase Two extends from the Nkpor-Umuoji Road through Owelle Aja and Obosi before terminating at the River Niger through the Meteorological Institute.

Project Manager Engineer Yusuf Zreb said his team was working to complete the current phase in order to clear the way for the third and final phase, which will channel floodwater from Ogidi directly to the River Niger, delivering what he described as a permanent resolution to the flooding problem in the area. He added that the design for the drainage connecting with the Nkpor-Umuoji Road channel was currently in progress to ensure unobstructed flow of floodwater across the network.

A stakeholder at the Meteorological Institute in Obosi, Engineer Steven Nwoko, commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for the intervention, saying it had helped reclaim the school environment which had previously suffered from flood damage. He also appealed for a realignment of the road to allow the institute to make better use of the surrounding area.
