UNIZIK Appoints Prof. Onukwuli as Emeritus Professor.

The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has approved the appointment of Professor Okechukwu Dominic Onukwuli as Emeritus Professor of Chemical Engineering, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the University, academia, and the engineering profession.

 

The approval was granted at the Council’s 242nd Meeting held on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, following the recommendation of the University’s Senate.

 

A pioneer staff member of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Professor Onukwuli has distinguished himself over several decades as an exceptional scholar, mentor, administrator, and professional leader. Throughout his illustrious career, he made remarkable contributions to the growth and development of the Department of Chemical Engineering, the Faculty of Engineering, and the University at large.

Professor Onukwuli retired from active service on August 5, 2025, upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 70 years, after more than three decades of impactful teaching, research, mentorship, and academic leadership.

 

His distinguished record of service includes serving as Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Project Manager of the STEP-B Project, and Chairperson of the University’s Emeritus/Emerita Professorship Committee, among several other responsibilities.

 

The Governing Council noted that Professor Onukwuli established himself as a distinguished academic whose versatility, competence, and dedication to scholarship produced widely referenced publications and significant contributions to knowledge in Chemical Engineering.

 

In recognition of these exceptional achievements, the Council conferred on him the prestigious title of Emeritus Professor of Chemical Engineering.

 

As an Emeritus Professor, he will continue to contribute to the academic life of the University through teaching, postgraduate supervision, research, and mentorship, while enjoying the privileges attached to the distinguished honour.

 

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, Governing Council, Senate, Management, staff, students, alumni, and the entire Nnamdi Azikiwe University community warmly congratulate Professor Okechukwu Dominic Onukwuli on this well-deserved recognition and wish him continued good health, fulfilment, and greater accomplishments in service to humanity and the academic community.
