A former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Dozie Nwankwo, who represented Anaocha/Njikoka/Dunukofia Federal Constituency of Anambra State, has been honoured with the prestigious 100 Most Notable Peace Icons Africa at a colourful ceremony held in Marrakech, Morocco, where several distinguished personalities from across the continent were also recognised.
The award was presented during the 100 Most Notable Africans Leadership and Business Summit, organised by the Davdan Peace and Advocacy Foundation, which attracted top government officials, business executives, diplomats, development experts and influential leaders from across Africa.
The former lawmaker received the honour ahead of the 2027 general elections, during which he is expected to seek election to the Senate to represent his constituency.
While serving in the House of Representatives, Nwankwo was credited with sponsoring several bills and motions, including one titled, “The Need to Investigate the Alleged Use of Paracetamol to Tenderize Meat and Bleach to Process Cassava in Osun State,” which was adopted by the House. Another motion he presented on February 27, 2020, called on the Federal Ministry of Health to intensify public sensitisation on the importance of periodic medical check-ups for Nigerians.
Among the notable bills he sponsored was the Bill to Establish the Public Service Institute of Nigeria, which successfully scaled second reading in the House of Representatives on April 28, 2021.
Leading the debate on the bill, Nwankwo stated that the Public Service Institute of Nigeria serves as the central learning institution for the Nigerian Public Service and plays a pivotal role in developing a world-class public service.
Beyond legislative duties, he also embarked on several constituency intervention projects in response to the needs and aspirations of his constituents.
These included the extension of the Enuagu flood and erosion control project in Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area; renovation of hostel blocks at Community Secondary School, Obeledu, Anaocha Local Government Area, and Girls Secondary School, Adazi-Nnukwu, Anaocha Local Government Area.
He also facilitated the provision of air conditioners and a 60KVA generating set for the Ifite Village Civic Centre in Aguluzigbo, Anaocha Local Government Area, as well as the construction and furnishing of a school hall at Nneamaka Community Secondary School, Ifitedunu, Dunukofia Local Government Area, among other projects.
Speaking after receiving the award, Hon. Nwankwo expressed appreciation to the organisers for recognising his contributions to public service and peacebuilding.
He described the honour as a motivation to remain committed to selfless leadership, grassroots development and initiatives that promote peace, unity and sustainable progress across Nigeria and the African continent.
“I dedicate this recognition to the good people of Anaocha, Njikoka and Dunukofia, whose support and confidence made my service possible. This honour will inspire me to continue working for a society where leadership is driven by integrity, compassion and the welfare of the people,” he said.
Project Director of the summit, Kingsley Amafibe, said Hon. Nwankwo emerged as one of the award recipients after a rigorous selection process that considered leadership impact, legislative contributions, commitment to peace, community development and public service.
According to Amafibe, “Hon. Dozie Nwankwo distinguished himself through his people-centred representation, legislative interventions and remarkable investment in community development. His record reflects the ideals of transformational leadership and peaceful nation-building, which this recognition seeks to celebrate.”
He added that the 100 Most Notable Africans Peace Icons Award was designed to honour Africans whose contributions continue to inspire hope, strengthen institutions and advance peace, good governance and sustainable development across the continent.
