The Labour Party (LP) Senatorial Candidate for Anambra Central, Ven. Tochukwu Sagacious Ikezue, has pledged to pursue legislative action to improve the welfare of elderly Nigerians if elected to represent the district in the National Assembly in 2027
Ikezue who made the statement while addressing journalists in his Awka office, said he would sponsor and champion a national bill providing monthly support for Nigerians aged 60 years and above, taking a cue from the initiative of the Abia State Government under Governor Alex Otti.
He commended Otti for what he described as demonstrating that effective governance was achievable through transparency, accountability and prioritisation of citizens’ welfare.
According to Ikezue, the Abia State law providing monthly support for citizens aged 60 and above represents a bold intervention that can reduce poverty among the elderly and restore dignity to senior citizens.
He said he would replicate the initiative at the national level if elected Senator, stressing that Nigerians who had spent their productive years contributing to their families and the development of the country deserved adequate support in old age.
“When elected, we shall replicate the Abia law of 60 years and above at the national level,” Ikezue said.
The LP candidate outlined a three-point legislative approach to achieving the objective, beginning with the sponsorship of a national bill that would provide monthly support for citizens aged 60 and above.
He also pledged to build bipartisan support in the Senate, saying the welfare of elderly Nigerians should not be viewed through the lens of party politics but as a humanitarian responsibility.
Ikezue further promised to advocate adequate funding and implementation through the national budget, using the Abia experience as evidence that such a policy could be implemented when there was political will and sincere leadership.
He said the initiative was consistent with the party’s philosophy of “Rescue, Results and Representation,” adding that the party would seek to translate successful policies into broader national interventions.
“The Abia model under Dr. Otti is an evidence. We will take that result to Abuja,” he said.
Ikezue called on the people of Anambra Central and other Nigerians to support leaders who would transform concern for vulnerable citizens into concrete laws and policies.
He assured elderly Nigerians that their contributions to their families and the nation would not be forgotten.
“To our elders: Your labour will not be in vain. Your dignity will be protected by law,” he said.
