Management Sciences for Health (MSH), a reputable Nigerian-registered non-profit organization, today, Monday, August 17, 2026, commenced its first Programme for Equitable Expansion of Community-Based Health Workers (PEECH) project in Anambra State, under the sponsorship of Mastercard Foundation, marking its first PEECH project in Nigeria.
On July 15, 2026, the PEECH Project Director, Dr. Anddy Omoluabi, visited the Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, during which time he said that the Commissioner for Health made a strong case for Anambra, forcing the team to look towards Anambra State, which was not in the plan earlier. Only about one month later, Anambra has become the first State in Nigeria to benefit from training community-based health workers to bridge the gap in access to trained health workers in remote areas and, consequently, improve healthcare delivery in Africa for at least 50 million people.
The training, which commenced on Monday in Awka, Anambra State capital, with the arrival of participants, is the result of the fruitful partnership between the Management Sciences for Health and the Anambra State Ministry of Health and will run through Thursday, August 20, 2026.
Participants in the training are drawn from Local Government Health Authorities (LGHAs) across the 21 Local Government Areas in Anambra State.
In the end, the project is expected to strengthen the community-based healthcare workforce in Anambra State, as part of MSH’s national and continental target of injecting no fewer than about 600 thousand new healthcare workers between 18 and 35 years old across Africa to enhance primary healthcare delivery in Africa.
