The Anambra State Police Command has condemned the gunshot attacks carried out by unidentified gunmen in Awka on Sunday, 30th August 2026, which resulted in the deaths of two persons.
According to the Command, three unidentified persons travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla, with registration number yet to be ascertained, reportedly shot two persons at separate locations within the State capital.
Speaking on the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, said:
“The Anambra State Police Command condemns in the strongest terms this dastardly act. Upon receipt of the distress information,the command operatives immediately mobilised patrol teams to the affected areas and commenced efforts to track down the assailants.
“We have intensified the ongoing manhunt for the perpetrators and we are calling for the support and cooperation of members of the public to assist in bringing the suspects to justice.”
Police operatives recovered the bodies of the victims along Capital City Road, Amaenyi, and S.M. Okeke Street, Amikwo, Awka, respectively. The victims were taken to a hospital where they were confirmed dead by medical personnel.
While one of the victims is yet to be identified, the second victim has been identified as Isaac Nwosu, male, also known as “Aiza.”
Items recovered from the scenes include the sum of ₦7,550, one Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, mnips, has described the killings as unacceptable and a direct affront to the peace and security of the State. He has directed the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for discreet and comprehensive investigation.
Security operatives have also intensified patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering across Awka and adjoining areas.
SP Tochukwu further called on community leaders, residents, motorists and business owners with credible information on the suspects, their movements or the vehicle used in the attacks to come forward.
“Such information will be treated with utmost confidentiality. Community partnership remains critical to effective policing and we urge residents not to hesitate to provide timely information that could assist in apprehending the perpetrators and preventing further attacks,”he added.
