All is set for the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, to swear in the 21 elected local government chairpersons in Anambra State. The Anambra State local government election, which was held on August 29, 2026, saw the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) win across the 21 LGAs in the State, demonstrating APGA’s firm and formidable dominance of politics in Anambra State. The election is the third in over twelve years, making Governor Soludo the first Governor of Anambra State to conduct local government elections twice as governor, in less than 5 years in office. Before Governor Soludo, the last local government election was conducted in January 2014, two months before the end of Governor Obi’s two terms of 8 years. In contrast, this reflects Governor Soludo’s agenda on local government administration under the broader agenda on governance reforms.
The outgoing local government chairpersons have served out their two-year term as prescribed by the Anambra State Local Government Administration Law 2024. Of those who just served out their tenure, only ten, including Nnewi North, Nnewi South, Idemili North, Awka North, Awka South, Anambra East, Dunukofia, Ihiala, Orumba North and Orumba South, were re-elected for another two-year term. Eleven others are coming in for the first time.
Local government administration in Anambra State is beginning to energize grassroots governance as more people get involved. The 21 local government chairpersons are expected to cascade the Solution Agenda to their various local governments for the next two years.
