The Anambra State Government has suspended elections for traditional rulers and presidents-general of town unions across the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The suspension affects elections scheduled for December 2026, January 2027 and February 2027.
The government said the decision aimed to let communities focus on the presidential, National Assembly, and State House of Assembly elections scheduled for 2027 without distractions.
The directive was contained in a public service announcement dated October 7, 2026, issued by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs and signed by the Head of Town Union Matters, Tony Onyekomelu, on behalf of the commissioner.
The announcement directed communities scheduled to hold leadership elections in December 2026 to reschedule the exercises to November 2026.
It added that leadership handovers in the affected communities must take place on the dates outgoing executives’ tenures expire.
However, communities whose traditional ruler or town union elections fall in January or February 2027 have been advised to postpone the exercises until Easter 2027.
The ministry attributed the suspension to the political campaigns and general elections scheduled for January and February 2027.
It directed traditional rulers, presidents-general of town unions, youth leaders, and women leaders to note the decision and ensure strict compliance.
- The ministry also notified the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, the State Director of the Department of State Services, the governor’s Special Adviser on Community Security and local government mayors of the directive.
