The Government of Anambra State is partnering with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Anambra State Command, to curb drug abuse around the State under the aegis of Solution War Against Drug Abuse (SWADA). This partnership was sealed during a visit by officials of Anambra State Government; the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, Special Adviser to the Governor on Youth Reformation, Dr. Nelson Omenugha, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Dr. Ebuka Onyekwelu, media and youth stakeholder, Mr. Chijioke Igwendu; and others, to the Anambra State Commander of the NDLEA, Charles Onubogu, on Wednesday in his office in Awka.
During the visit, the NDLEA Commander, Charles Onubogu, said the Command is focused on the supply chain of hard drugs, especially producers and manufacturers. This, he said, is because, once the source is cut off, there will be no more drugs for end users on the streets. He also pointed out that the use and abuse of hard drugs has a direct relationship with criminality.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, during his comments observed that drugs are a major issue in mental illness. Reiterating the firm position of the State Government in combating drug abuse, he cited the success recorded in the various psychiatric hospitals in the State, while expressing confidence in the outcome of the partnership with NDLEA.
Similarly, the Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, noted that the partnership will be useful in dealing with the troubling and rising incidents of drug abuse. On his part, Dr. Nelson Omenugha, Special Adviser to the Governor on Youth Reformation, said that the partnership reflects Governor Soludo’s Agenda on Youth Reformation. He also suggested that the campaign be extended to prisons across the State.
