The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspects for allegedly creating and circulating misleading video content capable of escalating the communal misunderstanding between Aguleri and Umuoba Anam communities.
The suspects, identified as Chimezie Peter, 17, and Sunday Offordile, were arrested in the early hours of 26th October, 2026, following intervention by community members who subsequently handed them over to the Police.
According to the Command, the suspects were allegedly intercepted while recording some indigenes of Umueri who were returning from their farms. The video was reportedly accompanied by false claims portraying the farmers as armed persons from Aguleri allegedly lying in wait to attack and kill anyone from Umuoba Anam passing through the route.
The Police said the authenticity, origin and intended purpose of the video are being investigated, noting that such misleading information could provoke reprisals, heighten communal tension and undermine ongoing peace efforts.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspects reportedly made statements relevant to the allegations. However, the Command said investigation is still ongoing.
The suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for further investigation and necessary legal action.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, mnips, reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and preventing escalation of communal disputes.
He strongly cautioned the public against recording, publishing or circulating unverified content capable of inciting hostility between neighbouring communities, urging residents to verify information before sharing.
The Command appealed to the people of Aguleri, Umuoba Anam and Umueri to remain calm and support ongoing peace initiatives.
