According to Information, the widow was reportedly brutalized by her late husband’s brother in Amanuke, Awka North Local Government Area of the state.

The matter was subsequently brought to the attention of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, by a human rights group during a courtesy visit to the State Police Headquarters, Awka, on Tuesday, May 6.

Disclosing this in a statement to newsmen on Tuesday, the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga said according to preliminary information, the said widow was physically assaulted and dehumanized by her brother-in-law, who also threatened her with dire consequences and a fine of One Hundred Thousand Naira (₦100,000) should she attempt to report the assault to the authorities.

“Preliminary information alleged that the suspect, in order to shield his crime, threatened the victim not to report to the police and that she would pay the fine of One hundred thousand Naira only, if she does,” the Police Spokesman added.

He further revealed that the CP Orutugu, moved by the gravity of the allegation and the need to protect vulnerable members of society, immediately directed him (the Police Public Relations Officer) to open a formal investigation into the matter to unravel the truth and ensure justice is served without delay.

He added that CP Orutugu also pledged his personal willingness to pay the ₦100,000 fine allegedly demanded from the victim, should she come forward and cooperate with the police.

“The CP, while directing the Police Public Relations Officer to investigate the incident, expressed willingness to pay the fine, but must ensure that justice is served,” the statement partly reads.

It added that the Commissioner’s assurance was met with appreciation from the visiting human rights delegation led by Mr. Charles Ejefonye, who commended the proactive stance of the Police Command and also presented a book to him as a gesture of appreciation for his commitment to human rights, community engagement, upholding the law and protecting the rights of citizens, particularly vulnerable individuals in the State.

Meanwhile, this reporter, Izunna Okafor, further gathered that the Police have also called on the brutalized widow to report formally and assured her of maximum protection and confidentiality, while also urging members of the public to come forward with any credible information that could aid the ongoing investigation.
