Former Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel has declared strong interest in taking up a leadership role within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), but made it clear that he would only accept such responsibility in an environment free of corruption.

Speaking in the aftermath of Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, the 37-year-old ex-international said the issues plaguing Nigerian football go far beyond results on the pitch.

Mikel Obi, known for his outspoken commitment to Nigerian football, emphasised that he has always given everything for the country and would gladly contribute again, but only under a transparent and accountable system.

In his words:

“One thing I have always done since my early days is fought for the country. I don’t know how many players have done that like I have, through the U17, U20, the senior national team.”

“Years of sacrifice. I have never for once said no to my country.”

He added:

“When I know I can give my opinion and help, I will always be ready. But again, I won’t have corruption tied to me. I am never going to do that if I am going to say yes.”

“If you want us going forward, you must make sure things are done properly.”

“Get the right people, people that have the same direction and thought, so when the players come back home to play, there is a good environment for them to play and perform.”

Though retired from international football, Mikel has maintained a presence in sports leadership. In July 2023, he was appointed Honorary Adviser on Sports in Plateau State by Governor Caleb Mutfwang.

In this role, he has provided strategic insight on sports development while helping drive new athletic initiatives across the state.

This experience, coupled with his stature in world football, has led many to view him as a potential reformer capable of reshaping football administration in Nigeria.

The former Chelsea midfielder has enjoyed a successful career:

Captained the Super Eagles,

Won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations,

Claimed bronze at the 2016 Olympic Games,

Led Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup,

Earned 91 international caps, and

Won bronze at the 2019 AFCON, his final major tournament.

His journey through U17, U20, and senior levels embodies the pathway many Nigerian professionals aspire to follow.
