Group Critizes Soludo, South-East Governors Over Insecurity.

BREAKING: Soludo Dragged to Court Over Illegal Shutdown of Onitsha Market, To Pay N2Billion Damages to Traders

The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) has criticised Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Soludo, and other governors in the South-East over what it described as persistent security failures in the region.

In a statement released on Tuesday, COSEYL President-General, Goodluck Ibe, accused state governments in the region of failing to provide adequate protection for residents, a situation he said has allowed the continued enforcement of the controversial sit-at-home order linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The group’s reaction follows recent developments surrounding the Onitsha Main Market, which was temporarily shut down by Governor Soludo after traders reportedly complied with the sit-at-home directive. The market was later reopened on Monday after traders agreed to disregard the directive moving forward.

COSEYL further alleged that the Chairman of Mgbuka Amazu Market in Onitsha, Chief Enibe Francis, who reportedly supported the state government’s position against compliance with the sit-at-home order, was later abducted by suspected enforcers of the directive.

According to the group, the market leader remains missing, and it expressed concern over what it described as insufficient action by authorities to secure his release.

“This incident highlights the seriousness of the security situation in Anambra State and raises questions about the government’s ability to safeguard citizens,” the statement said.

The group also criticised South-East governors for allegedly failing to provide assistance or compensation to victims affected by violence and economic disruptions linked to the sit-at-home order. COSEYL claimed that many residents have suffered losses or attacks for attempting to conduct business on days when the directive is enforced.

While recounting past incidents connected to insecurity in parts of the region, the group urged authorities to focus on restoring safety rather than relying solely on enforcement measures against residents and traders.

According to COSEYL, strengthening security operations and ensuring that those responsible for violent acts are brought to justice would help restore public confidence and encourage residents to resume normal economic activities without fear.

The coalition called on Governor Soludo and his counterparts in the region to intensify efforts to protect communities, improve security infrastructure, and guarantee freedom of movement and economic activities.
