The Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Anambra State, Dr. Queen Agwu, has said that in the last four weeks, Anambra has not performed badly in the ongoing continuous voter registration nationwide. The exercise, which commenced in Anambra State on January 5th, 2026, is slated to last through April 17th, 2026, and it is going on across the federation simultaneously, except in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) because of the council election coming up in the FCT.
Addressing journalists in Awka, the Anambra State INEC REC said that the current Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) is going on across the 21 LGAs in Anambra and that over a period of four weeks, Anambra has registered about 4, 423 persons. Looking at this number, the REC observed that “the turnout is not low considering we just registered people 5-6 months ago. We did registration in July. So far, the figure we are getting is encouraging,” Dr. Agwu said.
Before the Anambra 2025 governorship election, INEC conducted an off-election cycle CVR that was concluded in July 2025. That exercise added over one hundred and sixty-eight thousand voters to Anambra’s voter register, which is the highest to have ever been recorded in Anambra State since the introduction of CVR. However, the Anambra INEC REC called on the people and residents of Anambra State, who are now eligible to vote in 2027, to come forward and get registered. “Let my people of Anambra take this activity very seriously. We are saying the people should keep coming out”, she appealed.
Responding to questions from journalists, Dr. Agwu admonished that prospective eligible voters should also factor in where they are likely to vote and then go there and get registered. “People should register where they know they will be voting during the election,” the REC said. Responding to the question on how the Commission is addressing gaps, the REC said that they have continued to engage with stakeholders and that political parties are always carried along and well informed about INEC’s activities, such as CVR. However, on the question of INEC’s readiness to comply with technology towards expanding electoral participation, Dr. Agwu said that INEC is working hard and putting in its best in managing digitization. “On technology, I believe you are talking about eligible voters registering from anywhere and also voting from anywhere. We are moving as a nation. There is a capability per time. We are gradually getting to where we are going. We are working very hard as a body. During the Anambra Election last November, there was no glitch. Upload was moving fast, BVAS did not fail,” the REC concluded.
