The estate of renowned Nigerian novelist, , has issued a strong warning against the unauthorised use of his name and legacy in ventures, projects, and promotional materials.
In a statement issued on Friday, March 13, 2026, and signed by the Achebe Estate, the custodians of the late literary icon’s legacy said they had recently become aware that some individuals and organisations were invoking Achebe’s name and referencing the Chinua Achebe Estate without approval.
The estate said such actions falsely suggest endorsement, partnership, or affiliation and could mislead the public, institutions, and potential collaborators.
According to the statement, “The Chinua Achebe Estate has recently become aware of instances in which individuals and or organisations have invoked the name of Chinua Achebe and referenced the Chinua Achebe Estate in connection with ventures, projects, promotional materials, and public representations without authorisation.”
The estate noted that these actions risk creating the impression that such initiatives enjoy official backing.
“These actions falsely imply endorsement, partnership, or affiliation with the Estate and risk misleading the public, institutions, and potential collaborators,” the statement said.
The estate emphasised that Achebe’s global reputation places a responsibility on it to protect his intellectual and cultural heritage.
“We are grateful to God that Chinua Achebe is one of the most respected literary figures in modern history, and his legacy represents an intellectual, cultural, and moral heritage of global significance.”
It added that safeguarding the integrity of the author’s name and work remains a core duty.
“The Estate is responsible for safeguarding that legacy and ensuring that Achebe’s name, likeness, and intellectual heritage are used with integrity, accuracy, and proper authorisation,” the statement said.
The estate warned that unauthorised references to Achebe or the estate undermine the standards established to preserve the writer’s legacy.
“Unauthorised references to Chinua Achebe or the Estate not only misrepresent the Estate’s position but also undermine the standards of stewardship established to preserve the author’s legacy.”
It therefore directed all individuals and organisations currently making such claims to stop immediately.
“The Chinua Achebe Estate wishes to make clear that any unauthorised use of the name of Chinua Achebe, or any reference to the Chinua Achebe Estate, in connection with any venture, project, promotion, or representation must cease immediately.”
The estate further stressed that no one is permitted to use Achebe’s name, likeness, legacy, or institutional authority without its prior written approval.
“No individual or organisation is permitted to use the name, likeness, legacy, or institutional authority of Chinua Achebe or the Chinua Achebe Estate without prior written authorisation from the Estate.”
It called on all parties involved to halt such activities without delay.
“The Estate therefore calls on all parties currently invoking Chinua Achebe’s name or representing any affiliation with the Chinua Achebe Estate without such authorisation to immediately cease and desist from doing so.”
The estate also warned that failure to comply with the directive could attract further action.
“The Estate remains committed to safeguarding the integrity, legacy, and intellectual and moral rights associated with Chinua Achebe. Failure to comply with this notice will compel the Estate to pursue all appropriate actions necessary to protect these rights and preserve the integrity of Chinua Achebe’s enduring legacy.”
The late Achebe, author of the globally acclaimed novel , remains one of Africa’s most influential literary figures, widely celebrated for reshaping global understanding of African history, culture, and identity through literature.
