Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Majesty Nnaemeka Achebe, has announced October 16, 2026, as the date for this year’s Ofala Onitsha Festival, one of the most celebrated cultural events in Igboland.
The monarch disclosed this on Monday through the Onya of Onitsha, Chief Dr. Okechukwu Mike Areh, who also serves as Chairman of the Ofala Steering Committee.
According to the palace, the 2026 edition of the festival will be held under the theme “Igba Mbo, Iga N’Iru” (Strive and Advance).
Speaking on the significance of the theme, Achebe said it reflects the determination of the Onitsha people to build on their resilience and pursue greater progress.
“‘Igba Mbo, Iga N’Iru’ captures our collective resolve. From resilience to progress, this theme calls every Onye Onicha to strive forward and advance our heritage and future together,” he said.
The annual festival attracts visitors from across Nigeria and the international community and is regarded as one of the foremost platforms for showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people.
The monarch explained that the Ofala Festival is deeply rooted in spirituality and remains the high point of the Onitsha ceremonial calendar.
According to him, the festival primarily celebrates the Obi’s annual emergence from seclusion, known as “inyepu ukwu na nlo eze,” a period during which the monarch is believed to have negotiated the fortunes and wellbeing of the kingdom.
“The festival also reenacts the joy shared by the monarch and his people at the discovery that yam is non-toxic and a valuable source of food,” he said.
Achebe added that the festival serves as a rite of renewal for the Obi and reinforces the bond between the throne and the people of Onitsha.
“Whilst retaining its essence as an annual traditional and ritual obligation, Ofala has evolved into a major festival encompassing many events,” he noted.
Over the years, the festival has expanded beyond its traditional ceremonies to include activities such as the Oreze International Art Exhibition, the Ofala Youth Carnival, and the Ofala Medical, Health and Wellbeing Community Outreach programme.
The 2026 festival is expected to draw traditional rulers, cultural enthusiasts, tourists, business leaders, and members of the Onitsha community from across the world to celebrate the heritage and traditions of the ancient kingdom.
