Following the adjournment of a 98-year-old land dispute matter between Enugwu quarters and Umuenu quarters of Umuawulu community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, the people of Umuenu has reiterated their called on the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke SAN, to steer clear and remain neutral in the ongoing case.
The people made the called while speaking with Journalists at the premises of the Awka High Court, on Friday, shortly after the case was adjourned to 12th October, 9th November and 7th December, 2026 respectively for further hearing by the presiding Judge, Justice Ike Ogu.
Recall that the people of Umuenu Quarters have earlier petitioned the Attorney-General to steer clear and allow the Court followed due process to enable the case reached it logical conclusion for the sake of peace and unity.
Speaking further, the Chairman of Umuenu quarters, Comrade Bernneth Mbolu, said the land in contention has been in dispute since 1928 and the Umuenu people are painfully seeking governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo”s urgent intervention, insisting that the ancestral land the Enugwu quarters are working collaboratively with the state Attorney to forcefully seize belong to them.
According to him, we are very happy today with the Court position on the matter to enable us continue our agitation against the State Attorney to steer clear of the case and allow the Court followed due process to enable the case reached it logical conclusion.
“It is unacceptable for the State Attorney to say, he has interest in the land case that has been on since 1928
“We want the Court to help us as the last hope of the common man. We want peace and unity to be restored in Umuawulu community.
“We want the people of Enugwu quarters to have fear of God and understand that the land in contention belong to us, which is why we are seeking justice in the law court.
“And ever since the involvement of the Anambra State Attorney general and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke, the activities of land invaders and land grabbers has increased in the area.
“The disputed land has claimed the life of one of our community leader, Mr Humphrey Obi, living behind his widow wife and four children.
“As I am speaking to you now, our people don’t longer go to farm again.
“The disputed land is the only farm land we have while our neigbouring Enugwu quarters has 7 parcel of land.
“So we are tearfully appealing to the State government for urgent intervention so that our means of livelihood (farming) will be restored, Mbolu appealed further.
When contacted for his reactions to the allegations, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, said all the land-related criminal cases in the state have been submitted to him and they are currently under review.
According to him, there is a total of 180 of such cases now under review.
“We are reviewing all land related criminal cases in the state in respect of which petitions have been submitted to my office and the allegations of taking sides is not true.
“At the moment, there is a total of 180 of such cases now under review. Those which are civil in nature will be discontinued so that the parties can go to a civil court,” he added.
