Anambra State Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim on Wednesday declared open the maiden Anambra Governor’s Tennis Championship at the Anambra Country Club, Solution Fun City, Awka.
The tournament, sponsored by Audi Ltd., commenced on Wednesday in Awka, with 16 clubs across the state participating.
Ibezim appreciated Audi Ltd. for sponsoring the competition and congratulated the participating clubs for being part of the historic event.
“I thank the sponsor for partnering with us. This is a clear demonstration of the public-private partnership initiative of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
“On behalf of the governor, I declare this maiden edition of the Anambra Governor’s Tennis Tournament open,” he said.
Speaking at the event, President of Anambra Country Club, Awka, Damian Enekwechi, described the championship as unprecedented in the state in terms of its scale and prize money.
He said tennis was a beneficial form of exercise, particularly for older people, as it helped to improve their health and overall well-being.
According to Enekwechi, the club provided facilities for relaxation and sporting activities, including table tennis and swimming, adding that it was committed to sustaining the championship.
“It is not just a place for eating and drinking; it is also a hub for sports, recreation and healthy living.
“This is our first edition, and we are committed to sustaining it. Each edition will be better and bigger than the last,” he said.
Also speaking, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Audi Ltd., Dr Clems Ifezue, said the competition was organised to celebrate the Anambra Country Club and attract national attention to its facilities.
Ifezue, who described the club as magnificent, said about N3 million in prize money was available to participating clubs.
He said the winning club would receive N1 million, while the runner-up would get N500,000.
