The Anambra State government has discovered a factory at Nnewi where fake vehicle plate numbers are allegedly being manufactured and sold to unsuspecting Ndi-Anambra, ANAMBRA PEOPLE reports.

It has described the development as inimical to proper licensing by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the state government.

Investigations revealed that the said fake vehicle plate number production plant had been in existence over the years, dishing out plate numbers not captured in the government’s database and this trend had culminated into government losing huge sums of money to the cartels.

Chairman of the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service Mr. Richard Madiebo, who spoke with our correspondent on the development, said on assumption of office, he discovered that it had been the practice over the years.
He, however, maintained that the state government was working with security operatives and relevant Federal Government agencies to see that it was stopped.

Madiebo said such areas would generate huge revenue for the state, adding that government was interested in ensuring that everybody got the right licensed plate numbers in their vehicles.

Madiebo also stated that apart from revenue generation, genuine licensed plate numbers guaranteed security because it would help to know number of cars and how many of them use Anambra roads.

He said it was adviseable for people to obtain vehicle plate numbers from various accredited motor licensing offices, instead of patronising racketeers.

The revenue boss said to obtain genuine licensed plate numbers costs about N18, 750, but people would prefer to purchase counterfeit vehicle papers at the rate of N3,000 or N4,000 and would not be captured in the official database of both the FRSC and the State Internal Revenue Service.

He said government was currently making frantic efforts to sanitize the licensing regime in the state and that by December 31, 2022, government targets to hit at least N40 billion revenue base, even as government was determined to reduce leakages to the barest minimum.
