Barely a month after Paul Ofume, a haulage driver conveying copies of The Guardian Newspapers to Awka, Enugu, Nsukka and Abakaliki died from gunshot wounds he received from criminals while on transit, another haulage driver, Cyprian Nnaemeka was attacked on Wednesday morning.

Nnaemeka was attacked at about 4:00 a.m. at Dunukofia Local Council by suspected armed robbers while conveying copies of the newspaper meant for yesterday from Asaba to Enugu and environs. He, however, escaped without injuries, but the windscreen of his red colour Toyota Corolla was shattered from the incident.

Nnaemeka, who managed to deliver copies of the newspaper to their respective locations with the shattered windscreen, stated that his escape was a miracle.

“It was a sudden attack that nearly caused a somersault. These men have been operating around that axis for some time now. It is exactly one month after Ofume was attacked on the same route and he died last month,” he said.

Lamenting the incident, owner of the haulage company, Mr Vincent Ugwu, said his drivers were getting scared of plying the route. He called on security agents to do something about the activities of criminal elements around the Dunukofia Local Council.

“It is becoming a risk to operate in that area. The only thing we do is to distribute copies of newspapers and nothing more. These frequent attacks can ruin our business if not checked,” he said.
