The Labour Party (LP) in Anambra State has expressed disatisfaction over what it termed hastily amendment of the State Electoral Law by the State House of Assembly.

The party also querried lack of budgetary provisions by the State Assembly Assembly for the proposed Council eection stated for September 28.

Addressing reporters on Friday in Awka, state Publicity Secretary, Engr Theo Egbe said the party has resolved to approach the Court to challenge some of the obnoxious clauses in the hastily amended laws.

He alleged that the hastily amended laws were not unconnected to Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s plot to conduct the Council poll before October or loose the monthly Local Government Fund allocations to a holding account as ruled by the Supreme Court.

He however noted that the party was getting prepared to participate in the election so far as right and lawful things were done, urging members to wait for further instructions ahead of final position within the coming days.

The statement reads in part, “Having failed to keep his campaign promise “To conduct LG election within 6months after swearing in”, the Governor and his defeated faction of APGA are now under intense pressure to conduct the LGA election before October, 2024 or loose the monthly Local Government Fund Allocations to a holding account as ruled by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

“As much as the State House of Assembly did not make any budgetary provisions for the proposed Council Election, we are shocked and at a loss as to the speed of amendments upon amendment of the State Electoral Law even extending into the wee hours of night.

“However, after careful study of the amended Electoral Law by the State House of Assembly, we of LP have resolved to approach the Court to challenge some of the obnoxious clauses in the hastily amended laws.

“However, we as a party are getting prepared to participate in the election once the right and lawful things are done, and without prejudice to the outcome of the judicial proceedings pending before the court.

“We enjoin our teeming members at the grassroots to prepare and be ready for further instructions while we work assiduously to affirm our party’s final position within the coming days.

“We shall remain on constant alert, observation and analyses of unfolding events, and shall in due course be returning to you to state our party’s position/stand with regards to the Council election.”
