The Anambra State Government has sealed Madonna Mercy Maternity and Clinic, located in Uruagwu, Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area, for operating illegally since 2018.
The action was carried out by the State Ministry of Health, which disclosed that the facility had been operating without a valid license, employing unqualified medical personnel, and maintaining an unhygienic environment unfit for healthcare delivery.
Speaking to journalists after the enforcement, the Acting Director of Medical Services in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu, stated that the facility was shut down following a thorough inspection by the Anambra State Health Facility Accreditation and Monitoring Unit.
According to Dr. Chukwulobelu, several grave violations were uncovered during the inspection, including the failure of the maternity home to renew its operational license since 2018.
He said that the environment was unsanitary and unsuitable for any form of maternal care, prompting the government to seal the facility immediately in order to safeguard public health.
Describing the move as part of the government’s broader efforts to sanitize the state’s healthcare sector, Dr. Chukwulobelu reiterated the need for all health facilities to meet minimum operational standards.
He further explained that the enforcement aligns with the healthcare reform agenda of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, who, under the leadership of the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, has emphasized the right of Ndi Anambra to a safe, professional, and people-centered healthcare system.
Dr. Chukwulobelu also noted that the state government is intensifying its monitoring efforts and warned that any facility found operating below standard will be shut down.
