The Anambra State Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment, and Tourism, Mr. Don Onyenji, has described the forthcoming Ogbaru Boat Carnival as more than a cultural celebration, calling it a major platform to showcase the State’s tourism potential and natural heritage.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the carnival organizers at his office in the Jerome Udorji Secretariat, Awka, Onyenji said the River Niger remains one of Anambra’s greatest treasures, and the carnival provides an avenue to project its beauty to the world.

“The Ogbaru Boat Carnival is an opportunity to gain international attention through vibrant festivities. It aligns with the State’s drive to harness culture and tourism as tools for economic growth,” he said.

The Commissioner praised Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s efforts in creating a supportive environment for tourism, noting initiatives such as the Solution Fun City, which attracts families and visitors to Awka. He added that projects at Agulu Lake and Awka City Park are also in the pipeline to boost Anambra’s tourism profile.

Onyenji urged residents to collaborate with the government to build a thriving creative economy that would draw global visitors. “We welcome initiatives like this and will ensure that government support is visible,” he assured.

Convener of the carnival, Hon. Nonso Nwaebili, expressed appreciation to the Commissioner for the warm reception. He explained that the event, which has existed for decades, has evolved into a unifying festival for Ogbaru people, celebrating their aquatic heritage, culture, and peace.

“This carnival is the largest annual cultural gathering in Ogbaru. Over the past five years, I have worked to expand it into a regional attraction that brings people together from across Anambra and beyond,” Nwaebili said.

He revealed that this year’s edition, scheduled for October 5 at Okoti Market, Odekpe, will introduce two new features: the Junior Boys Boat Riders, aimed at training younger generations in aquatic traditions, and the unveiling of a cultural ambassador to promote Ogbaru’s identity worldwide.

“Together, let us place Ogbaru firmly on Nigeria’s cultural and tourism map,” he added.
