From Candidate to Watchdog: Former Guber Candidate Alex Nwankwo Accredited as International Election Observer
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

In a striking development that bridges political ambition with electoral oversight, media czar and former Accord Party governorship candidate, Alex Nwankwo, has been officially accredited as a foreign election observer for the upcoming Anambra Governorship Election. This appointment, confirmed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), positions Nwankwo uniquely to scrutinize the electoral process in a state where he once aspired to lead.

The accreditation was issued to the international election observation mission, Nouvelle Perspective, an organisation with an extensive record of monitoring democratic processes across Africa and beyond. The group notably participated in the observation of the United States presidential election that brought Donald Trump to power. As the Chief Media Correspondent for Nouvelle Perspective in Nigeria, Nwankwo will be receiving his official observer kits and tags alongside the mission’s National Coordinator, Dr. Jim Okolo, and other delegates, granting them authority to monitor the crucial Saturday, 8th November Anambra Governorship election.

For Nwankwo, this recognition represents a major shift from political contender to democratic watchdog. He was the first Accord Party’s flag-bearer in the November 6, 2021 Anambra Governorship Election, emerging after a tightly contested primary held at East End Hotel, Awka, before handing over to Dr. Godwin Maduka days to the election. His journey into politics began during his university days when he served as Secretary-General of the Student Union Government at the then-Anambra State University. That early exposure to leadership set him on a lifelong path of public engagement and civic participation.

Beyond politics, Alex Nwankwo has carved out an illustrious career in the Nigerian media landscape. He is the founder of Amity Global Network, a leading media consultancy and syndication brand, and the publisher of several reputable online news platforms. Over the years, he has also served as a publicist and media director for numerous political campaigns, social causes, and national initiatives, including the popular “Not Too Young To Run” movement, which was championed by former youngest Honourable member Tony Nwulu for youth participation in governance. He was appointed as his Media Executive in the National Assembly.

The upcoming Anambra Governorship election has attracted considerable national and international attention. INEC’s inclusion of accredited observer groups like Nouvelle Perspective is intended to promote transparency, accountability, and voter confidence throughout the process. Their presence further emphasises the international community’s continued interest in Nigeria’s electoral reforms and democratic maturity.

Nwankwo’s evolution from a candidate once on the ballot to an impartial overseer of the same system exemplifies a powerful story of transformation and renewed commitment to democracy. His journey mirrors the broader aspiration for integrity and fairness in Nigeria’s political system. By leveraging his experience in public relations, media, governance, and advocacy, Alex Reports, as he is popularly known, now stands as both a witness and guardian of the democratic ideals he once sought to embody — setting a precedent for other former candidates to actively strengthen the very institutions they once hoped to lead.

In recent years, Nouvelle Perspective International (NPI) has built a respected global track record — deploying observer missions to major elections that shaped world politics, including the U.S. election that brought Donald Trump to power, Canada’s national elections, and multiple African polls such as Tanzania, Botswana, Senegal, Gabon, Cameroon etc. The organisation has also monitored key transitions involving leaders like Justin Trudeau, John Magufuli, and Ali Bongo, underscoring its international credibility and broad experience in safeguarding democratic processes across continents.
