The Anambra State Government has announced plans to invest ₦200 million in the procurement and distribution of several endangered Igbo traditional fruit tree seedlings in 2026.
The seedlings slated for procurement include Ukwa fruit tree seedlings, Udala seedlings, bitter kola seedlings, raffia seedlings, and ogbono seedlings.
This disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Foster Ifejiofor, while speaking with journalists shortly after his bilateral discussions with the Finance and Appropriation Committee of the Anambra State House of Assembly on the 2026 budget bill.
According to him, the State Government will procure 60,000 Ukwa fruit tree seedlings at ₦1,500 each, amounting to ₦90 million.
In addition, 40,000 Udala seedlings and 20,000 bitter kola seedlings will be procured at a total cost of ₦84 million.
The Commissioner further noted that 10,000 raffia seedlings and 16,000 ogbono seedlings, valued at ₦26 million, will also be acquired in 2026.
Dr. Ifejiofor stated that these seedlings will be distributed across the 21 local government areas of the state for economic empowerment and environmental preservation.
He emphasized that the Soludo-led administration recognizes the importance of agriculture and has been working diligently to ensure that the youth are fully engaged in the sector—a commitment that is already yielding positive results.
The Commissioner added that the government is embarking on a palm revolution as a strategic tool for transforming the state, noting that 100,000 households will receive oil palm and other economic seedlings during the implementation of the 2026 fiscal year.
He further highlighted that under Governor Soludo’s administration , significant progress is being recorded in the agricultural sector, supported by various programmes domiciled in different Ministries, Departments, and Agencies—particularly road infrastructure projects that are opening up rural communities for increased farming activities.
