Anambra Govt Takes Down ‘Substandard’ Christmas Decoration After Backlash

The Anambra State Government has distanced itself from a Christmas decoration made at the roundabout of Eke-Akwa, the largest market in Awka, the state capital.

The state government in a statement, said its reaction followed widespread criticism of the decoration ahead of the yuletide season.

The government took sides with the backlash, describing the decoration as “substandard and uninspiring”, but noted that it was “wrongly attributed to the government”.

The statement said, “We wish to categorically debunk these misleading narratives, dissociate the State Government from the controversial decoration, and set the record straight for the proper information of Ndi Anambra and the general public.

“Contrary to the false claims being propagated, the said decoration was not undertaken or sponsored by the Anambra State Government.

“It was the initiative of a private citizen in their community, executed without any involvement, approval, or endorsement from state authorities.

“Upon becoming aware of the installation and the public dissatisfaction it generated, the government promptly directed its removal to maintain the aesthetic standards and dignity of our public spaces.

“The decoration has since been dismantled, and we assure citizens that such unauthorised interventions will not be tolerated moving forward.”

The government said it remains steadfast in its philosophy of fiscal prudence and responsible governance, and has intentionally adopted a cost-effective approach in public spending.

“During this festive season, we have focused our resources on adorning key locations that maximise visibility and impact, ensuring that taxpayer funds are not squandered on superficial frivolities.

“This deliberate strategy reflects our commitment to delivering value-driven governance that prioritises the welfare of our people over ostentatious displays.

“Thus, rather than indulging in wasteful expenditures, the Anambra State Government is delighting Ndi Anambra through the innovative, exciting ‘Onwa Dezemba’ package of events, a comprehensive festive programme launched on December 18, 2025, and running through January 4, 2026.

“This initiative features a diverse array of activities tailored to the interests and needs of various segments of society, including youth party, Christmas carol, children’s funfest, cultural performances, music concert, football match and family-oriented entertainment.

“These events foster unity, joy, and meaningful engagement, proving far more enriching in making Ndi Anambra and visitors alike enjoy the festive celebrations in Anambra State.

“Governor Soludo’s administration continues to place the people at the heart of its policies, channelling resources into significant projects that yield lasting benefits.

“We urge the public to disregard sensationalised misinformation over non-issues and channel their attention positively to celebrating the true spirit of the season through purposeful festivities,” the statement added.
