The Anambra State Police Command has deployed adequate security personnel to the Onitsha Main Market and its surrounding areas, as well as other strategic locations within Onitsha metropolis, following the closure of the market.

The deployment was confirmed in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu. According to the statement, the action was taken in compliance with a directive of the Anambra State Government, as approved by the Executive Governor of the state, His Excellency, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo.

SP Ikenga stated that the Police, in collaboration with other sister security agencies, were deployed to ensure the maintenance of law and order, safeguard lives and property, and prevent any breach of public peace during the period of the market closure.

He further disclosed that traders who were seen gathered around the market in a viral video circulating on social media were promptly addressed by security operatives.

The traders were sensitised on the need to fully comply with government directives, stressing that the measures were put in place in the overall interest of public safety, security, and economic stability.
