ADC State Lawmakers Condemn Alleged Assassination Attempt on Peter Obi.

The Caucus of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the Anambra State House of Assembly and Southeast Houses of Assembly has strongly condemned what it described as a brazen assassination attempt on former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Benin City, Edo State. In a statement signed by the Caucus Leader, Hon. Barr. Jude Umennajiego, the lawmakers expressed outrage over the reported armed attack on Obi’s convoy and private residence, which they said involved gunshots and damage to vehicles and property. The caucus described the incident as a deliberate attempt to silence a national political figure known for advocating good governance and democratic ideals.

The caucus further alleged that the attack followed earlier comments credited to Governor Monday Okpebholo, warning that Obi’s safety in Edo State could not be guaranteed without clearance. They argued that the governor’s remarks now raise serious concerns in light of the reported incident and called for accountability should any harm befall the former candidate. The statement emphasized that political violence has no place in a democratic society and represents a violation of the Nigerian Constitution and the rule of law.

Calling for urgent action, the ADC caucus demanded an immediate, impartial, and transparent investigation by the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, and other relevant security agencies. They insisted that all perpetrators and alleged sponsors of the attack must be identified and prosecuted without favoritism. The caucus also appealed directly to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene as Commander-in-Chief to safeguard democracy and protect opposition leaders from intimidation and violence.

In their message to Nigerians, the ADC lawmakers reaffirmed their support for Obi and urged citizens not to be discouraged by political threats or attacks. They maintained that violence would not suppress democratic ideals or the will of the people. The caucus concluded by calling on citizens in Edo State, Anambra State, and across the country to remain steadfast in defending democracy and the right of all political actors to participate freely and safely in the nation’s political process.
